Confirmation

Finding Ourselves in God's Universe...

Plymouth United Church of Christ offers a year-long spiritual journey for eighth graders who are considering becoming members of the church. During the sacrament of baptism, the congregation welcomes a person into the life of our church. Through the Service of Confirmation, (or for adults, the Service of Receiving New Members), the individual professes his or her willingness to affirm baptism and accept the congregation’s proposal for his or her membership. The confirmation program is open to any eighth grader who may be interested in joining the church; it is not necessary to have been baptized prior to beginning the program. Ninth or tenth graders who have not been confirmed may also participate in the confirmation program. (Individuals high school age and older may join the church through taking New Members’ Classes.)

The confirmation program is designed to equip participants to discern, with prayer, whether they are called by God to affirm their baptism and join the full membership of the church. Through confirmation, participants learn about the Christian faith and its role in an increasingly pluralistic world. They explore the identity of the United Church of Christ and they get to know the history and mission of our particular congregation. Here, brave questions of faith are encouraged! Confirmation is not for those who have solved the mystery of their faith; it is for those who aren’t afraid to wonder what they believe and who seek to embark on a journey of service, creative expression and prayer.

The confirmation journey involves partnering with an adult mentor who provides spiritual support and friendship along the way. Other components include: regular class sessions, service projects in the community, church lock-ins, opportunities to worship in other faith communities, and a weekend retreat with mentors. The year culminates with the Service of Confirmation.
